Based on a recommendation from our hosts at our Casa Particular in Baracoa, we decided to visit Baracoando in February 2018 and it was an amazing experience! The owner, who has been a vegan for over 30 years, single-handedly runs this unique restaurant. Despite the fact that the restaurant (and his home) were completely destroyed during the hurricane of 2016, the owner remains optimistic and continues to cook a distinctive style of Eastern Cuban vegan/vegetarian cuisine. Due to the owner needing time to gather ingredients from vegetable markets and nature, it is recommended to call ahead at least a few hours before your visit. The owner is fluent in French and also speaks some English, German, and Russian. The food consisted of a mix of raw and cooked dishes made from local vegetables, fruits, and spices, beautifully arranged on an improvised buffet on a former door (as most tables were destroyed in 2016). As a beverage, the owner served a delicious tea made from ginger and stevia. If you visit Baracoa, be sure to check out this place and support the owner, who embodies great humanism. The cost of the food ranges from 4 to 8 CUC per person.
I finally made it to the Baracoando on my third visit to Baracoa and I was very pleased! We ordered the tasting menu for 8 CUC which feeds well two adults. We had many dishes to try (rice, lentils, eggplant steaks, cabbage salad, indian tomato side dish, etc. . The food was different from anything I had eaten prior to that in Cuba and I discovered new veggies and fruits. The owner is very talkative and seems to enjoy talking about his food a lot. I like the outdoor setting a lot.
Simply spectacular food, cooked with love for the expert hands of aristides, with unique flavors and valuable conversations. Don't stop going.
After struggling to find good vegan food in Cuba, this restaurant was like a little piece of paradise. We loved it so much that we came back the next day. It is necessary to make a reservation in advance, as there is no menu. Everything is vegan except for honey, so make sure to mention any dietary restrictions when reserving a table.
Delicious, delicious food! It is not easy to find vegan options in Cuba, but here you can eat in peace knowing that the owner truly understands vegan cuisine. Let's support this place, vegans and food lovers alike!
