The food was amazing and the servers were so friendly. Thank you! The salads and burgers were delicious and the drinks were all great. I will definitely be returning soon!
I live local to the Garden Gate and despite not having eaten in there for a while, all seemed as good as ever by the reviews. I booked our Christmas Day dinner there.....unfortunately. The food was dismal, very poor in quality and quantity. The starters were passable, all went downhill after that. The turkey tasted like a reconstituted substitute. One who loves turkey couldn 't eat it. Vegan Wellington was 95% pastry. Lamb unpalatable. One said beef was OK. The accompanying vegetables were two soggy, stringy strands of carrot, 2 equally as soggy and stringy strips of parsnip and a small amount of shredded sprout and chestnut. We all agreed that was the only decent thing on the plate despite the teeny amount. Roast potatoes? These were more akin to overly microwaved 'boiled ' potatoes in skins. I have no idea what that disturbing lump of something passing as stuffing was. Mustn 't forget the pigs in blankets. The whole mini two of them! Then on to dessert. Sticky toffee pudding horrible. Chocolate brownie nasty. Lemon meringue tart was absolutely cheap lemon curd in pastry. The 'truffles ' to finish were not truffles at all but Lily O 'Brien 's Christmas dessert chocolates. I had a box at home for £9. Add to this the slow service. We were asked if we would like our drinks with our main, being prosecco and champagne. We said yes, but they didn 't appear. Halfway through the main we asked a member of staff if we could have our drinks. They vanished, still no drinks. Mains over with and still no drinks, had to ask the manager for them to finally appear. We also sat for inordinate amounts of time waiting for the plates to be cleared. Again had to ask. A couple on the table next to us had left and that table was cleared, cleaned and re-laid while we still sat in front of out dirty plates waiting to move on. The manager did apologise for our long waits and offered us a round of drinks but we had already bought more drinks by then, so he offered to discount our desserts. By my math, only 3 cokes were discounted. Anyway.....to sum up...the pub is nice, has a nice vibe, the decorations were lovely, the staff friendly, just not sure why we were left as we were....so all I can say is, do not waste your money by booking your Christmas dinner here. It would be better value to buy a cheap ready meal from a basic supermarket and microwave it. I 'd have no problem going to the Garden Gate again, I would just never book Christmas dinner there.
Popped in for lunch after a walk on the heath which was lovely. Becci looked after us well. I do recommend the pineapple cocktails.
Izaak provided excellent service, even during a busy quiz night. He made sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for a wonderful experience!
