It 's a small shop with quick counter service and no indoor seating, but if it 's nice out they have outdoor seating, and the neighboring blocks and wicker park are lovely so I tend to get mine in a cone and walk around when possible. Favorite flavors are the Sweet Corn (sounds odd i know but so good), the Raspberry Chocolate Truffle, and the Dark Chocolate. The sorbets are usually good too, especially on really hot days when you want something lighter. Yesterday, my two scoops in a sugar cone came out to $7. Honestly, a price I 'm happy to pay for a treat from a small local shop that I 'm happy to still have open in the area!
This is one of the best dessert shops in Chicago with exceptional gelato. My wife and I were extremely indecisive on our first trip to Black Dog but the attendant was super patient and extremely nice in letting us sample a number of their different flavors. I settled on the goat cheese caramel and popcorn flavors and both were excellent. The goat cheese definitely had a unique taste but not over-powering. The popcorn was also fun with chunks of popcorn mixed in. Definitely check this place out when you're in Wicker Park!
Gelato is just as popular as ice cream around here. If looking for the best this is one of the original places. Black Dog Gelato has been here and done that as far as frozen desserts. Prices are high because of course they are so **** it. Try some anyway because it's some cool stuff. Because it was hot I needed to cool off so I stopped in. It's about $6 for a regular cup, which is a lot. That's as in the price, but they fit a lot in the cup as well. Lots of flavors to choose from. Some non dairy, and I got the Dairy Free Lemon Passionfruit. Cool flavors. This was both sour and sweet. Could have gotten more but it's expensive. That's the only bad thing about it. Head to the Ukrainian Village one because the other closed. It's all good except for the prices. The cool thing is there's non dairy choices, and you can get to go pints if you want some for later, and per ounce it's more value.
Black Dog Gelato has two locations this one in Ukrainian Village and one in Logan Square. They offer a variety of flavors, rotating and seasonal (such as Espresso Chip, Yuzu Licorice Sorbet, Coconut Almond Chip, and even dairy free options) even the pickiest eater will find a flavor they'll like! They also offer a Pint Club membership, where you get a pint every month, discounts, promotions, and early access to special menus. We came here after having a meal in the area the place is small, but clean, and there were only a handful of tables. Staff were very friendly, and you can sample the flavors in their case until you find one (or, several) that you'd like to order. We ordered: +Mint Cookie filled with Oreo cookies and peppermint oil +Malted Vanilla Pretzel an Ovaltine flavored gelato with milk chocolate covered pretzels +Mango Hibiscus Sorbet with mangos and hibiscus flower +Raspberry Cider Sorbet raspberries and apple cider vinegar +Kibana Sorbet made with kiwis and bananas The gelato was thick and creamy, and you can get yours in a cup or a cone. Limited restricted street parking in the area. +tasty gelato +friendly service +limited restricted street parking available
Everything I've had here has been incredible. Service is always good but I don't really care... the ice cream is the star of the show. It's expensive but it's some of the very best ice cream I've ever had, and I LOVE ice cream. The flavors are interesting but not too crazy for most people (personally I would be open to even more unusual flavors). It's not too icy and not too rich. Does not leave a buttery film like some ultra-rich ice creams do (not good). The flavors are strong, balanced, well thought-out and just exceptionally delicious. Have been twice since I moved to Chicago 2 months ago and I'll be back again, hopefully soon.
