I was lucky enough to be part of a pre-Christmas festive get-together here on Thursday evening. The food was top notch as usual, and the tables were beautifully decorated. The roaring fire and two huge Christmas trees gave as warm a welcome as the three ladies on duty (Thelma, Megan and Lynnie) who made the whole night an absolute joy.
I stayed here for one night as I was in the West Sussex area with work. The White Hart is a lovely pub with rooms. I stayed in a comfy double room which was across the car park in what looked like a converted storage or stable block. It was on ground level (room 2) and was fabulous, converted to a very high standard with characterful wooden beams etc, and with a lovely bathroom and shower. But what really stood out for me was the service, all staff were so friendly which is really important to me as a woman travelling solo. Nothing was too much trouble. The food at dinner and breakfast was delicious. Breakfast was really varied, with cereals, breads and pastries, fresh fruit, and loads of cooked options. I would definitely go back, and would like to say thank you to everyone at the White Hart for my lovely stay.
The atmosphere is excellent and the pub is a proper country pub. It was busy and we were there for lunch. Staff were friendly and found us a table for 2 near the bar even though they were fully booked. We ordered our food which did take a while to come out, but we appreciate it was busy. Unfortunately, only one meal came out and we had to wait 15 minutes for the next one so my partner sat waiting with the food going cold. I had to ask twice to find out where our food was. Eventually it arrived and we were really pleased the food was delicious and the portions were very good. The belly of pork was very nice and there were generous amounts of gravy. Unfortunately, no one checked in on us or asked if we wanted to have a dessert which we did and ran out of time. Again, I had to ask twice to pay for the bill and we felt forgotten about. Overall, we'd absolutely go back a really nice pub and the food was excellent! I'd hope next time there would be better service and a dessert menu for us... Would recommend booking first. Better service and we'd have given 5 stars.
For the attention of Rob Goodier, Upham Inns. We stayed at the White Hart on 5 November in one of your double rooms for a special occasion on our way to a family celebration. When we arrived we were informed that you were having 'issues ' with the boiler. An electric heater had been put in our room and we were advised there should be some hot water. The heater was fine and warmed the room but there was absolutely no hot water. We had dinner in the pub that evening and were told that there would be some hot water for a shower in the morning. We got up early in the morning and ran and ran the hot water but it was stone cold so we could not shower as it was freezing cold. We complained at breakfast about no hot water and were only then told that the reason for this was that they had run out of heating oil for the boiler as it had not been ordered from the supplier. So the tale about having boiler issues was completely untrue and the actual reason was due to the failure of management to order a supply of oil in good time and before it had totally run out. We were angry as had we known the true situation when we arrived, we would have stayed somewhere else that night. In fact, we should have been informed before we arrived and given the option to stay or make alternative arrangements. The whole experience spoilt two days of what was supposed to be a special break away. In future, have respect for your customers and do not lie. Tell the truth if there is an issue so your customers can make an informed decision as to what they want to do. You tell people if you have run out of roast beef for dinner so why did you not tell us about running out of heating oil and that was the real reason the boiler wasn 't working?
