Finding a good dim sum restaurant to eat is probably one of the hardest things to do in the Bay Area or perhaps I am way too picky. Maybe a little of both... Having gone to college in San Francisco I have always enjoyed the great restaurants before the new millennium. So for today I decided to try Joyful mostly because of the reviews that was written about the place. The restaurant is very small with less than 5 tables inside and 4 doubles outside. Maybe I will come back in the summer to try the outdoor dining option. I guess I was the first one there though I noticed that some people had already phoned in their orders earlier. The lady at the counter took my order and I was told it would probably take about 15 minutes. I guess it is as fresh as it can get.At about the time, my order was ready to go and I was on my way home. Once these I unpack and was surprised that the food was still warm. Firstly, the steamed bbq pork buns were very good. Their size was small but for the price it was a good deal. The shrimp dumplings were also very good. The skin was light enough and the shrimp filling was sizeable. The wrapped sticky rice is my go to dish and I was impressed by this version. The wantons in chili oil was a little disappointing. Wantons tend to be very light in flavor so I expected the chili oil to add some flavor as well as heat. The egg tarts are also excellent though the custard can be a little bit more. The sesame balls were also excellent though the sesame seeds weren't consistent around the balls. Overall the food was a solid 4 to 4.5 stars.I did like the meal and will definitely come back to try some of their other dishes.
Great snack/dim sum place. Affordable, really tasty and right portions. All the dishes/ingredients are fresh and tastes great, authentic flavors and just the right portions. They are all very affordable as well so you can try out different dishes. The restaurant is pretty small but there is outdoor seating and it can hold up to 15~20 people. My new favorite brunch spot!
The staff was the best part, very friendly and helpful. The food was good. Loved the sesame balls and pork buns. Prices were average. Environment was underrated, but clean.
I can tell why this place was so packed! The dim sum and ease of access is most likely what draws everyone here! The workers here were super accommodating and patient with myself and all the patrons here. I had a to-go order and they were very efficient in putting in what I wanted. Although the order did take slightly long to come out, I understand because there were a ton of people there. We ordered a few items such as the pork and preserved egg congee and the sticky rice in lotus leaf. Both items were good but they didn't blow me out the water. Still a very decent spot for dim sum though.I really do have to take my hate off to the workers there because they provided excellent service to the dine in customers. They were able to accommodate a larger party by putting tables together and were very helpful and quick in clearing the tables while they were leaving. I remember one of the customers was about to throw his own trash away when one of the workers told him that it's okay, let me clear that for you. Extremely nice people here!
