There are so many better options for fish chips in the area. I think this is a good very late night place for grub when most places close.
No idea how this place gets three stars, unless it 's from people coming in to drink beer. My pastie was completely soggy and flavorless. My wife 's fish and chips were just OK. My daughter had sweet potato tots with her fish and they were burnt on the outside, raw on the inside. Do yourself a favor: pull over, look inside, say, aw, what a quaint and quirky English style pub, and then go somewhere else for food.
We were celebrating my brother 's birthday and he wanted to come here, he spends time here when he is out at the coast. Nice large parking lot, a big red bus, a photo-opp Stocks , and some other Britishy things greet you as you enter the restaurant from the main doors. An aroma of newly smoked cigarettes also assails you because apparently they allow smoking at the table right outside the front doors!! As you enter the restaurant/pub you are visually accosted by all the myriad decorations hanging on the walls and ceilings. I was amazed that they could fit this much stuff, literally there is no more room for anything else!! They even have a little gift shop if you want to purchase British things. We were seated at the tall bar table because they don 't have any chairs with arms so that people with mobility issues could use them to sit in and rise from their chairs. It worked out fine, though, it is always a challenge. Once we were seated we were brought some menus. Another person joined the table and they asked if he needed a menu. Well, of course he did!! Besides the beer we started with we ordered 2 plates of Mozzarella sticks for the table while we perused their menu. FIrst star is for the Mozarella Sticks. They were so good, they were hot and crispy on the outside and melty on the inside. The Marinara sauce was perfect. They were almost gone before I could snap a pic!! We placed our orders, with a bit of difficulty due to the ordering system malfunctioning. The poor server was new and she almost forgot to take two of our orders!! She sent over a beer for my brother 's birthday (second star). We ordered a variety of dishes. I had been looking forward to the English Pastie, having missed the Renaissance Festival this year. One of my brothers ordered a big cheeseburger with fries, my Mom ordered the Lobster Cheese Bake, my other brother ordered the special which was a full rack of ribs meal, my Dad shared that with him and also ordered a green salad. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals (3rd star), I was less than impressed with my pastie. The pastry was awful, tasted like a cheap pot pie crust. The inside was OK, but they had to cover it with gravy to add moisture to the pastry. I read another review where her English Pastie came with mashed potatoes. That would have been nice to round out the plate. It did come with a green salad and rolls (I didn 't know they had been put on the table because they were all the way at the other end). The rolls were nice and soft, but nothing baked in-house, more like they came ready-made and could have been purchased at the grocery store. I would come here again, I hear they have open mic and trivia nights. This is what they need to keep the business going. The prices were reasonable, that is a good thing in this economy. I will add a final star just because I know that businesses are struggling right now and my experience would have been better if I had ordered something else.
When in England have fish and chips. This is what I ordered. The fish were patties like on would get at Long John Silver's. On top of that the patties were fried too low. This made the patties heavy. Very disappointed. My companion was recommended the lobster casserole. More sauce than lobster. Also disappointed. As someone who operated their own English style restaurant these two items would have not left the kitchen.
The decorations are overwhelming, but it all must be dear to the owner's heart. I can't imagine any other reason for such crowded walls and sprinkles of hand made signs everywhere. Could they use a makeover or just keep it status quo, is something the owner will need to address one day to maximize profits. I imagine there is much potential there. Ideal location with ample parking is a big plus. The locals seem to enjoy getting inside for the drinks as the bar was busy. There is also trivia game night somewhere on site. That process was unclear except to the locals. Dogs are allowed inside as are children in case you have any in tow. No comment on the food. Check it out and see how it goes.... Or the bar is open.
