The only downside is the price which is very steep compared to similar venues and standards on the island. Imagine a place of rest and peace with only nature around you and your wish to pay a couple hundred pounds less per night.
Good but not Great! We stayed here for 3 nights in late June: Great location with good access to a number of tourist attractions and activities. Generally speaking, good quality food and decent amenities however overall quality was lower than expected. Understandably some of this likely is result of being short staffed. We both ordered Halibut on our first night which was severely overcooked. My breakfast smoked salmon dish was way too salty and the monk fish wasn't done well either. Some of our negative experience was perhaps related to a large and loud group of 14 that checked in on the same day at us. They had no respect for everyone else and were very loud at dinner and the bar. I would have expected the hotel of high aspirations to set some guidelines or in fact have a limit for size of groups to preserve the experience of others. Last but not least, Dan did a great Whiskey tasting experience for us. He's clearly passionate about whiskey and his job.
This review is only for the restaurant, the service staff and the food served. The staff at the bar were great. We enjoyed our drinks at the bar prior to dinner. She had a great experience 7 years ago and we were looking forward to the visit. We were not aware they had changed head chef and lost their star. We picked the beef for our main course (only 3 choices available) but unfortunately despite sending it back, the second attempt was still over cooked and far from medium rare. The chef then appeared from the kitchen and acknowledged that we didn't enjoy the food. He told us to pay for our drinks, said he would pay for our food and left. I couldn't tell who was more upset, us or him, since his eyes were all blood shot. I was dumbfounded by his lack of professionalism. We can well afford to pay for the food and just wanted to enjoy the evening. Come for the drinks and enjoy the view. Just leave your expectations at the door if you choose to dine at the restaurant.
Only went for lunch, so worth the one hour drive. A most beautiful location, great staff and highland hospitality. The tasting plates make excellent starters, then progress to the venison pie with perfect mash, seasonal vegetables and memorable gravy, served in a paneled dining room lined with portraits of ancestors of the present owners. Everything is to a very high standard but not stuffy.
Food, drinks and staff were all friendly and very professional. Highly recommend for lunch. Will definitely return. Special mention to Isabella for making my husbands birthday so special.
