I was in hudsons a few times recently between first and second ACT locks and does not have to agree with the hostile reviews. I find the service friendly and fast eating well and generously portioned.
We are canberra native. huge food. we avoid this place like the plague. once every two to three years we try again, either because we hope it has become better or we forget how bad it is, sometimes both because of the beautiful situation today. it was the former when we were not here in three years and could not think of much more open. menu and eating were exactly the same. stodgy, prepared sick home dinner. I had the chicken parma and a banan guerrilla, dad had the seafood basket and mama had the nachos. papas seafood basket should come with tartaric acid sauce and lemon wedge, it did not come. on request they had no idea what we had asked until all three of us showed and cried on the menu. tartare sauce then came with the lemon wedge it was the end of the lemon, so it was difficult to both have been picked on our table in a round. Don't let me start on my banan smoothness they had used to make ripe banans and let the little black think in drink. it left me a terrible coating in the mouth when I drank it. the dame behind the theke was friendly, but the rest of the waiters were not and had very limited English skills our waiters got such a fear when we asked him something, I think they hope nobody speaks to them. that brings me to my last point and the biggest question in today's climate. there is no distance between the tables. any caffe and restaurant we have ever visited since the COVID hat from Australia has tried to keep covid safe. also in teeny tiny small land cities have a written check in book. but hudson in dickson had nothing. considering that it is the first place you met when you enter canberra from sydney, we hope that no one will look at this wise.
Went here with our 1 and 3 year old. Great traditional menu and family friendly. Counter service and food was ready in lightening speed. Had the Hudson breakfast which came with a coffee fresh orange juice. Great coffee and delicious scrambled eggs. Massive servings!...This is a no fuss, simple breakfast place. Will be back.
My family comes here every single time they visit me in canberra because they think its the best cafe they have ever seen. i have tolerated it for a long time because no one in my family values my opinion much but still i disagree....i have been here a few times a year for 5 6 years and every time i wish we could try somewhere else. a long time ago i thought the veggie burger was good but either is has become worse or i dont remember it appropriately. since the first time ive been ive eaten all three or four vegetarians options that dont have mushrooms because i hate mushrooms and while this is a lot of vegetarian options compared to most places, they were mostly not very good. i just tried a pumpkin tofu burger and it was significantly better than the other options, and also the second place, veggie burger but it was still quite plain, and both options are extremely dry. why cant they add more sauce? the pumpkin tofu burger literally only had the pumpkin tofu patty and a single slice of cheese on it. no additional things. luckily i was served a salad and chips on my plate and i put the entire salad on my burger which also helped the dryness issue because of the salad dressing. but ideally the burger would have had its own vegetables and sauce and i wouldnt have had to make it work myself. however it is a huge meal and its been 7 hours since i ate there and i am still not hungry so the price is worth it for the volume of food. ideally just dont be a vegetarian or do be one but enjoy eating mushrooms.
