Our party of four went for the four course menu. The bread was served a shame: some slices of the...cheapest prefabricated baguette that you will find for 39 cents at your local discounter. The Amuse Bouche was a joke and we received a sip of carrot soup with curry, neither interesting in taste nor appealing in the presentation. A restaurant should use this opportunity as a shop window for the creativity of its kitchen, or at least to follow the guests curiously, but in the case of the “old school” the Amuse Bouche seemed to be pure duty. The starter, a goat cheese telette was better, but still, as you expected, i.e. rather boring: no creativity, no interesting approach, not unforgettable at all. The next course, allegedly a parmesan soup, was considered a full-scale flop. Bland, not a touch of Parmesan taste everywhere, and for whatever reason with some noodles as strange shrimp. The vein main course was ok, but still not unforgettable. The cod main course was tasteless, with a bland combination of pumpernickel bread crumbs, tiny pieces of bacon, beans and supposed pears, of which the latter could not be found. Maybe they needed it for dessert, that was a trio of a small piece of pear tea, mousse au chocolat in ready made supermarket quality and something called "Williams parfait" (in fact, little more than vanilla ice cream a disappointing finish. The wines that accompanied the menu were of medium quality and not up to what we were used by this place; I guess the place has recently changed its name from “Weinhaus Alte Schule” to “Gasthaus Alte Schule”. The four espresso we ordered after our dinner came without candy, just another clear step back from the time they served coffee, accompanied by an etagère with chocolates in this restaurant. The service was another disadvantage: While we found it a nice note that the owner was present and made his rounds from table to table, we do not appreciate the (head? The waiter's attitude. When we were born and raised in Cologne, we know and like the simple way in which the inhabitants speak (and also strangers), but we would expect a waiter to find a better balance between friendly and cross-border ruins in a self-proclaimed elevated restaurant. For example, when we mentioned the foreign city in which we currently live, the waiter was quick to judge that “a city was nice to visit as a tourist, but not to live in”. Another example: When the dessert wine was served, one of our parties was not at the table. We mentioned that he had previously expressly asked not to have a sweet dessert wine but a different kind. The answer of the waiter: “If he is not here, he cannot complain later.” He said that in a funny way, but not to deliver another glass of wine. On the one hand, she cleared the table without saying a single word (I assume she knew the quality of the parmesian soup and decided better not to ask if we liked it, on another occasion she served the three male members of our party first, with the female guest later being served by her colleague (a disorder that aggravated the male guilt). In summary, it can be said that the “old school” does not meet their old standards. The whole dinner experience was bland and uninspired, the bread, the Amuse Bouche and the soup were a shame, and the service had too many mistakes to be acceptable. We became various reasons for their name change from "Weinhaus" to "Gasthaus" (after the waiter, better to work in search engines, after the owner to win more millennials, but whatever their true motivation was, they should be less on marketing and more on a creative cuisine, intrusive service and attention to details that can make or break an evening. For more than 300 euros, we would have liked to see the result of inspiration, thoughtfulness and passion. What we really got was cravings and at best moderate.
We came to eat in this restaurant near our hotel after working all day. We decided to avoid the gourmet proposal on the menu and tried to find something more plentiful to satisfy our hunger. We opted for white carving with roasted potatoes and salad... (fried slices of veal with roasted potatoes and salad, but: portions were children big (valley slices are expensive, ok, but what if you put some more potatoes on the plate? ; calf slices only of salt and fried (then what is the point with such expensive meat if you can feel the taste? Potatoes were tasteless, unsalted and ground; plus, they were roasted with onions and this detail was not on the menu (and my wife can not eat onions...; the green salad contained pickled peppers (sorry, I cannot stand). I am sure that this restaurant can offer more than that, but our experience has deceived both under the quality and the amount of food and we will not repeat it. PS: When we complained about dinner and portions, the cook told us that we could have asked for more potatoes: I'm sorry, it doesn't work like that! I'm not used to begging for more food on the plate when I go to a restaurant. I assume I'm gonna get some wort, the price I'm gonna pay. If not, I'm just not coming back.
We have a tour through this 500-year-old monument for culture and excellent food. Sasha Kohnert, the owner, showed us his cooking skills in his house, which is a road down. His wife is a good friend of mine and we have more privacy in his home. He cooked for me and my husband the most delicious German meal we ever had. We plan our 20th anniversary in his restaurant where he is the chef and the owner.
The best restaurant in Cologne right! Here everything is harmonious, the staff, the ambience and the really excellent food.
We spent our wedding day there and were not disappointed: very delicious 3-course menu, suitable wine recommendations and attentive service. In addition, there is a UVC air filter that kills viruses directly, which is very pleasant for Corona safety. The distance was always kept. The atmosphere of the old school is cozy with a beautifully selected decoration. The selection of dishes is changed every 2 weeks, so it is not boring. We will definitely come back on next occasion!!
