If your family has never been to a Luau you are staying at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, go to this one (Monday nights only). Very lovely friendly cast performing sharing history of the Pacific Islands. General seating is more than adequate, no reason to pay for VIP. Be aware buffet line really only goes thru once, so fill up your plate.
Food was good and service was great. You get to taste a variety of foods from around the South Pacific. Entertainment was exceptional. My only complaint- fire dancers at end of the night are really hard to see if you aren't in the front as they are at ground level. We were two tables in from the center. The show needs to figure out a way to get the guys up onto a platform (can't use the stage because of fire hazard). It would be awesome if the tables and chairs got higher as your seats got farther away.
Outstanding! Excellent food and entertainment that feels authentic, not commercial, sanitized, cheezy, or patronizing. The master of ceremonies may well be a Professor of Anthropology, with a superb voice and sense of humor. The performers look like they are from Hawaii, (not by way of Chicago), and they seem to take real pride in sharing their heritage. Three generations thoroughly entertained.
The luau was more reasonably priced compared to others in the area. However, I had some issues with the lead singer. It felt a bit like I was watching a church play, with all the mentions of “Heavenly Father” and “missionaries.” The other luaus I attended focused more on their cultural deities rather than a Western god. Overall, the service was excellent and the food was decent, but the lead singer/MC was quite irritating. This was my fourth time at this luau, and it was the first time I encountered him. Hopefully, the hotel doesn't decide to keep him on. He was incredibly annoying!
