Yesterday I found myself in Olympia again and they were open. So I stopped in to get a true italian sub. I couldn't have been more disappointed! First of all a true Italian sub has mortadella on the sandwich.. this however did not!. The meats and cheeses that were on the sandwiches were good that is why I'm giving it two stars. But the absolute worst part of the sandwich was the bread. It was very dry and chewy and had no flavor I got a whole sandwich, which they they cut in half and wrapped each half separately, which I appreciated. I ate half for lunch and I ate the other half for dinner. I actually went to Jimmy John's and bought one of their loaves of bread and remade the sandwich I had for dinner. I will never eat here again! Jimmy John's is much better as well as being cheaper
The facility is clean and efficient with rapid service. I ordered a salami sandwich. It was exceedingly bland and tasteless. I picked a piece of salami and ate it separately and would not have been able to tell it was salami by its taste since it essentially had no flavor. The same was true for the cheese and bread. The ingredients were fresh. The price was reasonable. The clam chowder was not particularly memorable being somewhat bland also.
Easily the best sub shop in Olympia, although there really isn't much competition, if any. Subway is a contender, for example. Meconi's from what I understand, was founded by transplants who missed big city food. It shows. These are the subs I would take you to if you wanted a sub and were in town from any major city. It's a sub shop, not a sandwich shop or cafe. There is a difference. Now, I have had much, much better subs, I am something of an aficionado of good subs. Bread must be good, and ingredients must taste good. These guys do that. It's no Bronx Salumeria or Katz' famous deli, but for Olympia it's gold. (maybe bronze elsewhere.
The food is amazing! I just wish they were open later! By the time I'm hungry for dinner and decide I want to eat here, 9 times out of 10 they're closed already! A couple times I've ordered at the last minute and got there a couple minutes before they close and the staff was always very sweet and understanding. Everything is made fresh, daily. I recommend trying the homemade chili, the southwest salad and the big cookies they have. It is SO good!
Called in for a hot sub at 6:05 pm and was informed they already turned off the grill for the night. An hour before they close. I understand trying to leave on time, but that's rediculous.
