I had high expectations for Mason Dixon when I visited for lunch. The smell of smoke in the air made me excited for some hickory or charred flavors in the meat. However, disappointment set in as everything on the menu was sold out. The "smoked brisket sandwich" turned out to be more like a Sloppy Joe on a hamburger bun, with a sweet sauce but lacking the smoky essence I was hoping for. It was okay, but not exactly what I was looking for. I don't plan on returning.
First time visiting. Excellent experience. Tried the smoked chicken wings appetizer and Chicken and Waffles only offered on dinner menu) for main. Tender juicy and perfectly seasoned fried chicken, homemade bbq sauce, light fluffy waffles, warm syrup. Comfort food done right. Next time I would try...the beef or pork ribs they looked amazing). Street parking. Make a reservation, limited seating.
Its always challenging to find good Southern food north of the border, but Mason-Dixon solves that then some! Dinner menu is simple, but all the basics are covered. We had the sample platter with brisket, fried chicken, wings fries...awesome! The chicken was crispy...yet so tender the brisket just melts in your mouth. All the food had just the right amount of smoke flavour. Recommended!
After receiving a mix of reviews we decided to try out Mason Dixon. We were warmly greeted and the great service held up throughout our visit. Our server and the Bartender were friendly, funny, and great help with our drink and food selections. I had...the Man Hot tan a hot toddy like variation of a Manhattan) that was delicious and my spouse had Blueberry Bourbon drink that was also good. Our party of 3 shared a Mac and Cheese appetizer and the 3 meat sampler. We chose Fried Chicken, Brisket, and Beef ribs. The Chicken and Brisket were the standouts as well as the house made hot sauce. While Mason Dixon won't displace any of my favourites it is a strong addition to the Ottawa restaurant choices.
