I recently ordered catering from this restaurant and the food was so delicious that I had to go back last night. The mashed potatoes were incredibly creamy, the fried calamari was tasty, and the Chicken Cordon Bleu was delicious. Their mofongo was the best I have ever had, made with sweet plantains, green plantains, and yuca. But the highlight was definitely the Churrasco, which was phenomenal. Words and pictures cannot do justice to their food - you have to experience it for yourself. The service was exceptional, prompt, and attentive. The best part was being able to enjoy a late Saturday dinner with my daughter and nephew at this family-oriented restaurant.
This restaurant, originally Puerto Rican, has changed hands several times and is now run by people of Dominican descent, resulting in a change in the culinary offerings. The staff does not play music that reflects the community's tastes, which can be frustrating for customers. A 16% tip is automatically added to the bill by the waitstaff, and additional tips are solicited when paying by card, even for takeout orders. The new management and cooks do not live up to the standards of the past. Another restaurant in Brooklyn receives better reviews for their food and service. It may be worth trying them out and leaving the Queens location to fade away.
I have never had any issues with this restaurant until today. I ordered two meals but only received one. My boyfriend called the restaurant, they apologized and promised to deliver the missing item. However, almost an hour passed and nothing arrived. When he called back, a woman at the restaurant claimed the order was already outside. He went outside but found nothing. She then called back with a rude attitude, accusing us of not answering calls or texts from the driver who was apparently waiting outside. We had received no calls or texts. My boyfriend went outside again, searched up and down the block but found nothing. It was frustrating as we live just a quick 5 minute drive from the restaurant and should have received the order promptly. It seems like the driver didn't even make an effort to contact us properly. It appears they simply did not want to deliver the order that they had messed up. My advice to El Viejo would be to properly train their employees on how to communicate and treat customers. Despite being polite and respectful, we did not receive the same treatment in return. We will not be returning to this restaurant and will also advise our family and friends to avoid it. Good riddance!
3 Cuban sandwiches ordered. super dry! barely mayo. pork was dry and overcooked. looks old. only dry!
I had the cheese mofongo and it was delicious! great service as always!
