We were an asian couple and i was terribly sick today. I was nor feeling well in my stomach and my whole body was sore and i was vomiting as well. Miguel took our order and he realized i was very sick. He asked if i just want the soup and he would make some fusion tea for me. Later on, he put me outside to sit because the fish smell from the kitchen was making me sick. He then asked the cook, Sanko to make me a japanese porridge because he told me that the soup would be too much for my stomach. My boyfriend told me that the fish was amazing and really soft and was perfect to have w the pickles come w it. Overall, I believe that such kind-hearted people would have great success with their business as the guests can truly feel how welcoming and kind they are. Thank you again Miguel for your help and care. Today despite my sickness, im really warmed and had amazing exp in porto.
I found their place recommended in monocle. we made an effort to go went to namban for their japanese lunch set. they warned us from the beginning that it was going to take a long time. we said ok and waited. what was not at all clear was that the price for the lunch set (soup+dish+rice+side dishes, as advertised on their wall) was covering on that specific day only one dish of soba noodles. in portugal, the lunch set usually also includes a drink and a dessert. we understood that it was not the case so we paid for those. so, after spending their way too much time there, we left knowing we were going to be hungry within 2 hours and having paid 38 euro for 2 soba noodle dishes, 2 half glasses of homemade ginger ale and 2 desserts. we were disappointed. after i posted my opinion on my insta, they got in touch. they were saying they were sorry but at the same time condescendingly told me that if we wanted to fill up, they were not that kind of place. they said sorry but they didn’t think they did anything wrong. the wife said we should have known that the noodles were everything when the husband presented them to us. instead, we understood we were going to get soba as the soup part of the set. the soup included some raw green bean pods that were impossible to chew and that, just like the entire experience, left a very bitter taste in my mouth. last but not least: after having a civilized albeit contradictory discussion on social media, they blocked me… amazing communication and interpersonal skills…
This is one of three japanese restaurants in Porto that did not go for the fusion sushi thing. And it is the only one that will serve you something else besides sushi, makis, soba, and the usual stuff. The guy behind the counter, who is very nice, is a Steve Zissou lookalike; the cook seems to be a japanese woman. They have two dishes per day, plus dessert. I ate a pork dish, which at a first glance looked like a schnitzel, except that the batter and everything else accompanying it were completely different from much what I've eaten so far. The kiwi-tea-mousse vegan desert was awesome, although a bit expensive. Totally worth it.
You only have two options, vegan and non-vegan ans it depends on the daily menu, but it is delicious. Also, people who work there are really friendly and nice!
It's one of few authentically japanese places, serving different teishoku-style meals everyday. You can feel that every meal is poured with care. We had deep fried Saba (horse mackarel) with white Miso soup, and the dessert was mochi with azuki bean paste and green fig served with Hojicha icecream (and roasted green tea). On Mondays they serve japanese curry, definitely a must try for folks who don't know it. The only problem is the waiting time but for those who like the japanese gastronomy it's worth it.
