Previously my favorite restaurant in the city. really sad to see how the quality has done. — old review of 2015: howling wolf seemed to change her menu to be vegan friendly since the last reviews. I added the tofu burrito, veganized and fried beaning and it was the next thing I had to get authentic Mexican food from the mission quarter in san fransisco. extremely friendly waiting staff that was more than willing to meet our nutritional needs. updated by previous review on 2021 11 29
While nothing is clearly labeled vegan, the servers there are so friendly and helpful when it comes to ensuring your food is how you want it! The rice and beans there are vegan (I asked! and I typically get the tofu tacos or burritos. And a jalapeno marg, of course!A perfect place to meet with friends and family who have mixed dietary preferences. This place gets PACKED. QUICK. Had high hopes for here but ended up with a block of tasteless tofu and dry beans.
First off, fantastic tofu burrito with no cheese (you have to specify). Would totally come back for that. The chips and salsa, amazing. We got curly fries and plantains, which was wayyy too much food, but then again, it was a holiday weekend. This was a PHENOMENAL vegan burrito. Incredibly flavorful, especially with the mange salsa and avocado. The sides were amazing but it was so much food we couldn't finish. Best of all? Our bill was under $30, and we got sodas and sides with our burritos. I've spent more at Chipotle. Everything was delicious. I just wish they adopted the trend of labeling things or saying what can be made vegan. Still, I would not hestitate one bit to come here again!
Pro trip Get's busy on weekends. Be ready to put your name in when you get there. No reservations and won't tell you the wait when you call. Food is both filling and tasty. Don't order the tofu tacos or mango tofu salad not good. Instead order the following which I've verified do not have meat, cheese, sour cream in them (butter and other dairy I'm not sure): veggie fajitas with corn tortillas (verified no lard) rice (verified not cooked in chix broth and such) any of the beans (no lard) say no cheese and no sour cream. You will be very satisfied. A ton of tasty veggies are in the fajitas brocolli, carrots, pepper, onions, etc.
