I have a huge food crush on David ChangI'm pro MSG, no matter how unfashionable it might beIt makes things delicious.
This is part of the Momofuku building which includes multiple restaurants. Located on the second floor, this is the closest to a bar with food. We sampled cocktails, buns and ramen. The chicken bun was good and everything else was OK. Actually, the cocktails were somewhat disappointing - really watered down. The service was very friendly. Since this is connected to the hotel where we stayed, it would have warranted a return visit to Nikei or one of the other Momofuku venues if it had been better. It did not warrant another visit.
Momofuku has 3 floors, with a noodle bar on the first floor, and a high end restaurant on the 3rd floor. We ate on the second floor which offers food from both with casual seating. Chef David Chang is the founder of the Momofuku family of restaurants and this one did not disappoint. The cocktail menu is the first indication of an inventive menu. We were with a group and tried just about all of them, and not a single complaint. Our scottish waiter/bartender was fantastic and extremely knowledgeable about food and drinks.I was advised to start with the greentea egg for an appetizer, and it was the most amazing egg I have ever eaten in my life. The flavors in each bite are almost indescribable, however the menu describes it as having kimchi mayo, furikake and scallion. Fortunately Momfuku is near the Toronto Hilton where I usually stay so I see more of those eggs in my future. Everyone at the table ended up getting one and all agreed. For dinner I ordered the hangar steak, and was not asked how i wanted that cooked, because they already know how to cook it perfectly! It was amazing beef with lettuce leaves, kimchi, some sauces, meant to be wrapped together. Fantastic! We shared some sides of cauliflower bhaji which my description won't do it justice, it appeared to have a curry or something similar on it, and was great. We also had some nugget potatoes, which again was hard to describe other than being little nuggets of deliciousness! Our group did order desserts but after the meal, I could not try them but everyone raved about them. Overall, an amazing experience for the taste buds, in a fun atmosphere with great service!
