Close to zaachila, but worth the ride. it is a huge place and one of the favorite chef rick baylis. looks as if several hundred people were sitting on the wooden planks and tree trunks. the welcome mezcal has been appreciated. the menu. is overwhelming, but we have settled in the Turístico plates to taste wonderful Oaxacan foods. the prices were very reasonable. the barbacoa was dull.
We came here on the Zaachila market day (Thursday) on our way into town, because we wanted to try the gigantic tlyudas they are famous for. Now we can say with confidence this is a tourist trap. pesos for what is basically an average...tlyuda is absurd! You could get tlyudas in the market for this price. In other words, the gigantic tlyuda is times the price of a regular tlyuda but is not times the size. It seemed most of the other menu items were of average price, so if you go, just avoid the temptation to try the gigantic tlyuda. The atmosphere is very weird, it is obviously a place for giant tour buses as it is the size of a German beer hall. Did not know about the animal cages, probably better I didn't or would have rated it lower.
Excellent Mexican cuisine with spectacular service. We had a local friend take us here for brunch on a Saturday morning. He has dined here for many years and suggested it as the one must do dining experience for Oaxaca. We had three different egg dishes...and hot chocolates (you can get them made with leche or agua), Jamaica juice, pastries and more. Ism ad to say I don't remember names of them all, but it was all spectacular. We tried mole negro, the local mole, and although I'm not a mole fan this one was really good. Great experience.
You won't believe how huge this place is. They must have outdoor dining space for 300 people. But what is good here is the food, especially the lamb barbecue. So, so tasty and tender meat. Wash it down with a nice Mexican beer and you have a great meal.
