We had a lovely afternoon, very relaxed, cakes, scones and sandwiches were delicious and our host (sorry I didn't get his name was very attentive and checked we had everything we needed at appropriate intervals during the afternoon. A big thank you to Alison and her team, who were very helpful with my arrangements and sandwich choices (for the fussy eaters! .
After travelling a fair distance, afternoon tea was very welcome. Served in the lounge area . The children enjoyed pizza a cold drink while the adults tucked into eggs benedict tea. Nothing was too much trouble for the very friendly staff.
I dined at the restaurant with a three-course meal voucher from Groupon. The meal itself was enjoyable, but my friend's cup had some issues as there was a skin on the coffee. The waiter promptly replaced it when we notified him about the issue.
I went there with my two daughters and my granddaughter on a wowcher voucher. We had previously been to another local venue for an afternoon tea, but this was not nearly as good as the Goldthorn Hotel. We had a great time here and would certainly recommend it. The waitress was friendly and pleasant asking my granddaughter what she would like to drink (she was only 10). The wine was very palatable, not the usual paint stripper kind. The sandwiches were lovely and fresh with a good choice. We all enjoyed the fact that there were nibbles as well as the sandwiches and cakes/scones. The only tiny niggle was that the cream to go with the scones was squirty cream, much better would have been thick whipped cream. We were so impressed that we are waiting for another wowcher dea so that we can go againl.
Treated my parents and daughter for an afternoon tea as part of my Mums 80th birthday celebrations. The restaurant was completely deserted on our arrival which was a little disconcerting. The waitress was working alone she informed us, and would be with us as soon as she 'd finished serving somebody else. She did return after 5 minutes to ask if we wanted wine (quite odd as this was part of the package). The wine duly arrived and was fine and the food arrived some five minutes later. Sadly it went down hill from here. The sandwiches had spent far too long in the fridge (possibly left overs from a previous night 's buffet) and were of poor quality a meagre slice of ham with horrid rind on it and cut in half. No dainty little finger sandwiches like on the pictures. The other options were cheese and pickle and tuna and cucumber. To give her credit the waitress did ask if we wanted any more and went off to prepare some fresh ones but by the time she returned the moment had gone. Crisps and peanuts were included but no fancy little cakes as we 'd expected, we got a scone with cream and sachets of jam and a slice of horrid 'fruit cake '. The waitress asked if we would like cheese cake which was the only saving grace of the whole experience. The choice of drink was tea or coffee. When it arrived I mentioned that at other locations there was a choice of beverage to which the waitress pointed to a table with some sachets of tea on it! Perhaps I 've got 'afternoon tea ' wrong but on my previous experiences I 've felt a little bit pampered regardless as to if I 'd bought a discount voucher or paid the full £14.40 per head. My parents celebrated their wedding anniversary there 60 years ago but I doubt they 'll be back for their Diamond celebrations. A very disappointing experience at the Mercure Goldthorn Hotel!
