Contribuer aux commentairesI was lucky enough to be back again this year! Glad to see there is now another reviewer. The restaurant was very busy on this occasion. We succumbed to the temptation just to order a selection of delicious starters this time. Great choice. Excellent dishes and wine. Dessert was a lovely Greek yogurt with fruit. Standout dishes were the garlic prawns and the tuna and tomatoes. The bread is truly wonderful. Check out the website as opening hours are limited.
We were delighted to be back in the restaurant this Summer and I am happy to add a few comments to my review of last year. I see no one else has reviewed this establishment yet. It is definitely worth a visit! This time we shared a very wide variety of the delicious starters with a large amount of the fabulous bread. These included prawns in garlic, cheese, tomatoes, anchovies, house salad, tomato with tuna, steamed mussels, serrano ham and duck foie gras a veritable feast! For main courses we ordered a mixture of fish and steaks as well as the assortment of sausages. The priciest steaks come in at a very reasonable €15. These mains were better accompanied than last year with more potatoes and vegetables. My seabass was delicious yet again and filled the plate. I really must try something different next time! The house wine is a steal at €8 a bottle. We were a party of ten with five young people who all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They continued with sorbets and desserts, followed by coffee. The tiramisu and cheesecake are both €4. Together with a bar bill from downstairs we paid €275.70 for a very good meal. Amazing value compared to what you would pay in Blighty for a similar restaurant experience. The whole night was downgraded by one blob due to the waitress who was working alone. She appeared to be struggling with serving and with communicating with the table. She came across as somewhat brusque with us and I ended up apologising for not speaking Valencian, despite speaking fluent Spanish to her. People in the region speak both languages, but no tourists will speak Valencian. They have an English menu, as I mentioned last year, and could do with producing one in Spanish. I don't imagine the staff speak English. I was further irked when our change was short by €20. I remember the same thing happening last year, but I didn't mention it in the review. It was quickly rectified. I am mentioning it this year... Nevertheless, I look forward to returning next year.
This is a lovely restaurant above a local bar in the small village of Gavarda, 10 miles or so from Xativa, south west of Valencia city. The huge windows give the establishment an airy feel. The menu is in Valencian, but also translated into English (no menu in standard Spanish though! Don’t turn up expecting a meal before 10pm, as the staff probably haven’t appeared for work until then! As you expect in Spain, the starters are large and this sometimes means the main course can seem a letdown as mains often have poor accompaniments in Spain. The children in our dining party all went for prawns in garlic to start with whereas we adults chose a variety of dishes including tomatoes, whitebait, the aforementioned prawns and a couple of others I can’t recall now. The bread is absolutely delicious and they are happy to serve you more. Unfortunately a couple of the dishes we requested were not available. I had seabass as my main course. As I expected there was little else on the plate, but it was really tasty. My husband picked the variety of local sausages, which he assured me was delicious. Our friends had duck, fillet steak, ribeye steak and lamb. Wine was excellent and reasonably priced. Some of us also had dessert and we all had coffee. It was a quality meal and if it was variety you wanted you could order all the starters and share them with lots of bread. If you intend to travel to the restaurant I would ring first as I imagine they open on a limited number of nights. I see I am the first reviewer as I have had to submit details of the establishment to Trip Advisor. Do give it a try if you are staying in the area.
