We dropped by for lunch on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and although the terrace was fully booked, there was quite a bit of seating left indoors. It’s right at the market, so great for shopp my or people watching. Service was quick and accurate. My...daughter loved the taco salad bowl, my chicken quesadillas were okay... I would return and try another meal. We took churros to go and they were delicious!
So it was Sunday, Cinco de Mayo as we gringos say, and I was at Jean Talon and getting hungry. I 'd heard good things about El Rey del Taco and got a seat on the patio because it was a beautiful day. It 's got a...really large, very interesting menu. I chose tacos de lengua which were just delicious, braised tongue, a little onion and cilantro and salsas that were just brilliant and a guava soda. Just wonderful highly recommended!
This small restaurant, located at the Jean Talon Market, is a must try. The service is great and the selection of Mexican food is vast. Up on the wall there are pictures of some of their dishes, so patrons can look/see before ordering. Last night...I had the Chicken Tacos. The plate was loaded with 4 soft shell chicken tacos. The sauteed veggies were cooked to perfection. I added some of the medium salsa provided as an appetizer by the restaurant. Three salsas and multi colored nachos are placed on each table when you arrive; yum. Since the restaurant is small there is often a short wait for a table. Once you eat, they have a small section where patrons can purchase tortillas, salsas, mole and Mexican soft drinks. A definite must try if in the area. Parking g is tricky so be aware of restrictions.
I just had a terrible experience at the take out counter. I ordered (like I have several times before) 500 g of fresh chorizo so that I could take it home to make later this evening. I was surprised to find out that the guy behind...the counter started cooking it up! I immediately told him, also the person behind the cash and another server that that was not what I wanted. I said it several times, and they kept saying that they don 't sell fresh chorizo... but I 've bought it there several times before. They said that they only sell it frozen in 2 k bags... but I 've bought 500 g of fresh (not frozen) chorizo there before. The guy who cooked it up said that he didn 't have any fresh chorizo to give me, and that I would like it better the way he cooked it, and that he didn 't cook it all the way. I said, that 's not what I want again. Anyway, stupid me, I paid for it $28!!! (for 5 fresh tomatillos, a bag of chips, a bag of tortillas). I was so angry I couldn 't speak. I should have just said I didn 't want any of it, and should have walked out. My daughter was with me, so I just kept my anger in check, paid and left. I will never spend another cent in that place. I 've been there for lunch once before, and the food was mediocre at best, but I used to enjoy going there for chorizo every once in a while to make a quick dinner at home. Next time, I 'll go to the latino market that is a few blocks away.
