"Out for one of our many countryside drives, it was (just after) lunch time and we were looking for a good, but inexpensive, place to chow down. We decided to return to the Old Country Restaurant in the main business section of New Hamburg. We had enjoyed it on our first visit, but first impressions can be deceiving. We found a parking space a few doors down the street. The restaurant was past the rush and had closed down a large back session. Just a couple of women were finishing their meal their. We were invited to seat ourselves at any table in the front section, and did so. A very friendly server came with menus and informed us of the specials. She quickly returned with ice water and lemon. We had decided on the hot hamburger sandwich. I chose fries and soup. My spouse had the same plate, but with mashed potatoes and a greens salad. About ten or twelve minutes later, our soup and salad arrived. I was pleased that I had chosen the former; it was filled with good-sized chunks of beef and vegetables in a tasty broth. The salad was very so-so--a typical bowl of salad greens with some dressing. About ten minutes further along, the main course was delivered to our table. These were very obviously "home-made" beef patties, very thick and sizeable, on a single slice of bread, covered with gravy. The fries were what one would expect, and I slathered them with ketchup. My spouse had the gravy for her mashed potatoes in a side bowl, and used it sparingly. The hamburgers were excellent, reminding me of ones my Mother would make when I was a boy, with onion and spices. The meal was more than enough. It was obvious, looking about me, that the locals were pleased with their meals. Everyone was chowing down in fine style. Good service, good surroundings, good food--just what I would expect and enjoy in a rurally-oriented atmosphere! Good stuff!"
