We had our small wedding here in May 17. When we looking for a venue, we immediately fell in love with the Merrill Magee . All though we checked several other properties we gladly came back to the Merrill.. the setting was lovely, the attention to detail, and the helpfulness of the staff was onderful.
About a year or so ago, we ate in the main restaurant with a party of four. We found the menu to be quite pricy for this area and therefore we had high expectations for the food. Unfortunately when the four different entrees arrived at the table, they all looked alike... very brown. I had the chicken cordon bleu which looked like a very dark fried hamster and was quite inedible. That was the overall consensus among our entire table. I had heard from a friend that the pub menu was better than the dining room menu, and that there was a new chef who was much better than the earlier one. So tonight my husband and I decided to try again, but in the pub. Again we found the food to be very mediocre/poor. The soup was good, but uninspired. It seemed like it was a day old at least because the veggies were mushy and the chicken bits were too chewy. I also ordered the whole grain falafels, which had no discernable flavor besides fried bland grain. I was expecting cumin, coriander and garlic, or some variation thereof which would identify what was on the plate as a falafel, or at least vaguely Middle Eastern. No humus, tahini or any appropriate garnishes. Epic fail. They need to take it off the menu or learn to cook it so it even slightly resembles what is advertised. The fish on the fish and chips was fairly decent, but the twice fried fries that the fish was on were overcooked, tasteless (except for the slight burnt flavor and flacid. There was no lemon or vinegar offered. (Details, details... . Suffice it to say, the second visit was no better than the first. We will not be going back for a third try.
We went here with a fairly large party for my birthday. So much attention to detail in every cozy room very impressive ambiance. The staff was very accommodating to a few of our requests which we appreciated. There were a few menu options not available making a narrower list of options more challenging but once served everyone enjoyed their meal. Especially the super delicious pork poutine! We will definitely return.
We went with a group of nine for dinner, five kids and four adults. We made a reservation but when we got there found the table was too cramped and asked if it would be ok if we added another table. They kindly added the other table since there was room at the time. This Bar Restaurant space is absolutely beautiful and our waitress Marlena was very knowledgeable when we asked questions about both the menu and the Inn's history. We ordered the poutine for the table and ordered a second it was so amazing, definitely get this! I had the Veal scaloppine special, it was delicious and enough for me to bring home for another meal. The only downside was that service was a little slow, but we heard they had a party of 30, so perhaps that's why? Otherwise we had an amazing dinner and I would definitely go back.
