We were running errands along Kingsway one day and decided to try and get some lunch. Unfortunately for us, the whole area was hit with a power outage and most of the regular restaurants that we would go to were closed because of it. For some reason, mid-way up the block, some of the places were still with power so we decided to try Joojak, which specializes in northern-style Chinese cuisine.

Pink Elephant Thai is part of the Thai House group of restaurants that also includes their signature Thai House restaurants as well as Urban Thai Bistro. My impression is that Pink Elephant is going more for the younger crowds who may be more interested in style than anything else. They had recently opened a location in the new Marine Gateway complex, near Dublin Crossing Irish Pub.

Lucky Plus Restaurant is a newish Chinese restaurant that opened up at the corner of Rupert and East 22nd Avenue. The interior is nice enough and it feels spacious given the high ceilings. We weren’t actually sure what to order so we stuck with some basics. First up was the House Special Chow Mein $12.95). There was a good amount of crispy noodles as well as sauce to complement the noodles. The shrimp were plump and had a nice snap to the bite.

Royal Seoul House Korean Restaurant has been a staple on Broadway since 1990. I remember this being my introduction to Korean food back in the 90’s but I haven’t been back here in years. We were in the neighbourhood recently getting my watch fixed and decided to drop by for lunch. The interior actually looks like it hasn’t changed very much over the years… it’s a rather large restaurant and is kind of setup to look like a courtyard with buildings with blue tiled roofs.

Back in early March, before the whole coronapocalypse shut down all of the dine-in eating at restaurants, we dropped by Kook Korean BBQ on East 1st. It wasn’t very surprising that the restaurant was pretty quiet when we visited… but that suited us perfectly. We decided to order their Combo A $58.95) and add an order of Japchae $17.95). The thing that I liked about this place is that you can have your BBQ prepared in the kitchen for you in case you don’t really feel like doing the BBQ yourself. The thing that’s really impressive here is the number of banchan dishes that comes with your meal.

Nothing says summer like enjoying an ice cream cone while you stroll the beach.Paradiso Gelato Bistro is conveniently located near Kits Beach Park, one of the more popular beaches in Vancouver. It’s not directly across Cornwall Street. Instead, it’s located a block in on Yew Street. Here we have the Passion Fruit Sorbet in a waffle cone $4.75). The sorbet was pleasantly tart and refreshing… perfect way to end the evening by the beach.

Even though “Punjabi Market” is primarily located on Main Street, I’ve often associated the neighbouring area along Fraser St to be part and parcel with it. However, much like how Chinatown is no longer the sole domain of Chinese stores and restaurants, this area of south Fraser St has become more multicultural over time. Eat Me Thai is one such example and is brought to you by the team from Bangkok City Cafe on West 4th.

After an aborted attempt to visit another restaurant, I eventually wound up at Restaurant Yugo. It wasn’t a total loss because this place has been on my radar for a while now. Located on Main Street between East 26th and East 27th, this spacious restaurant serves up some seriously good (albeit somewhat expensive) Japanese items.

My first attempted visit to Chengdu Spicy Restaurant didn’t go as I had planned (what else is new? . I’ve been wanting to try this little restaurant located at the corner of Wilson and Kingsway for a while now so I made a point to visit earlier this year. Unfortunately, I relied on the hours that were listed on Google (they didn’t have a website that I could find and arrived just past 11:30am only to find that they were closed and the hours they were displaying in their shop said they open at noon (Mondays-Friday . So, after reporting the new hours on Google, I headed to another nearby restaurant and waited for my next attempt to try out Chengdu.

Pho Edmonds is located in a nondescript yet busy mini mall in Burnaby. While there aren’t a lot of tables in the restaurant, there’s plenty of room as the tables are spread apart. On my first visit, I opted for the Pho Nam Gan Sach $9.25 for large) – beef brisket, tendon, and tripe in a rice noodle soup.
