So disappointment Enjoy Indian food since 1972! That was the third Indian restaurant we tried in Ottawa, and the only time I've reached less than 4. The starter was $24. It was very dry and... we ever got half a Pakora (they are on the photo, but its only half) that is a shame, as this was the best of the pile! Then we ordered Lamb Madras, Chicken Jalfrezi and Butter Chicken. The butter chicken was the worst and had a pronounced taste of vinegar perhaps the geese was old or there was an old dish mixed in we could 't quite work it out. The Madras and Jalfrezi were only very artificial tasting, so we didn't eat them. The aftertaste was not pleasant. The chicken biriyani was fine and we ate that and the Naan and Roti were fresh and so we filled it. Although we say at the beginning of the evening that we have the order to take home. The waiter didn't comment when he took full curries away, and we told him we didn't want to take them! But to be fair, he was quite uninterested all night and I had to remind him of drinks. There were only 7 with us and unfortunately I know why. After reading reviews and the wonderful history of this restaurant, there is no joy to post this review, but perhaps the owners can correct before the Dalhousie restaurant is even more quiet than last night (Saturday, 17. December)
We first went to another close of Indian restaurant in Byward Market based on its top reviews- but we left (thanks) after ignored, and despite the name it did not scream east decor. We went to Shafali and it was a relief! Smelled delicious,...picked authentic and service was great. The best Samosas we've ever had - even compared to India. Spectacular spicy and balanced aromas in butter chicken and saag distributor, with thoughtful and beautiful shrimp. We're so happy we came to visit.
We were a family of four. I wanted the children to experiment Indian food. Papadum, who usually come free as an appetizer, were $12. I chose her specialties like the appetizer plate (without Shish Kebab without these were the pieces of the sausage)... and the mix tandoori Sizzler (very small for $28). Buttered chicken just fine. Byriani at $18, come on! Naans were excellent. I guess their food costs are about 20% and there was no "wow" in what we tasted. The waiter took the kids to see the kitchen and cook in the Tandoori what was great. As a conclusion, the food was too expensive, but the service was really good.
I was here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. Lunch was average because the naan was not properly cooked. An expensive buffet with less options. The worst experience was Chicken tikka masala, which was ordered during our dinner, the onions in... there is not properly cooked and we found a piece of plastic bag in the curry. The curry came with a kind of rice that was not properly cooked. The only good was the naan, but was worthless because the curry was not spicy as described in the menu. Customer service was almost on nil, ordered an imported beer and was a different one than it was served. Total experience 1 of 5!!!
This restaurant has a family feel. The food is good with plenty of spice. The menu is not the most extensive nonetheless there is enough to cater for most tastes. The service is good. Have been back a couple of times.
