We visited the Gate with friends recently. The decor is amazing. However, food and service was a mixed bag. The fish and chips were enjoyed, but the slow cooked pork was thoroughly disappointing. It mainly consisted of two small strips of pork belly and two tiny scallops. What there was of the pork, was overcooked and dry. Definitely not as described and extremely poor value for money. Service was also lacking. The young man attending to us with the tattoos made us feel uncomfortable from the outset due to his attitude. He was not at all pleasant. No surprise, we will not be returning.
This is a tough review, after a good week of thoughts and feelings the review is ready! First off, good entrance, straight to a table, mildly busy and a lot of staff working. Nice swift drinks orders at the table too. Table clean and tidy, good 2 sets of cutlery. Next, the starters, nice starters, calamari was nice, not the biggest portions but it was enough. Then the prawns with ciabatta, good amount of prawns and bread. Prices were fair for the starters. Next, the mains. This is where it went downhill, I went for the dirty burger, it was about 10 pence short of £19, however, to me and my partner it was just a cheese burger with one rash of bacon and a single slice of pickle on the side. It was hugely disappointing, it wasn’t a fresh burger (from what I could tell) the burger meat itself was bland, and the cheese seemed to be just plain burger cheese. It was advertised as to be “crispy” bacon, the single slice was not, it also said “lashings” of cheese, maybe it was supposed to say “lash”. Fries were very short, I think it would be better suited to chunky chips but that’s just a personal preference so I haven’t added this into my rating. The sauce it came with was a beef dripping sauce however the fries weren’t big enough to dip in, and there wasn’t enough substance in the burger to absorb it. My partner had the lamb, no complaints there. To finish was the trio of desserts, nothing amazing but no complaints there. We had mac and cheese on the side, glad I’m did as I was underwhelmed by the burger. Could’ve been creamier but it is what it is. A larger red wine, a pint of neck oil, 2 starters and a 2 mains aswell as the dessert to share came to £92. Overall, I don’t think I’ll return, it didn’t have the wow factor, considering there’s 3 other pubs in about a 2 mile radius this was nothing special nor competitive.
Liam was very helpful and friendly. The food was very nice and there was a good menu choice. Will visit again in thee near future
