Drinks and light entrees came quickly but it got to 7:05 and no sign of mains (4 pasta dishes). We asked a server if mains were far off as we needed to head off soon. She brushed past and did not return. After another 10 minutes and no update or food we asked another server who looked worried and came back and said there was a back log in the kitchen and the manager would come to chat to us shortly. The diners next to us who had arrived around half an hour after us had their meals by this stage. We suspect our orders may have been lost. At 7:25 we asked for the bill and headed off to catch Hamilton. No sign of the manager. While we were there multiple groups of diners who had booked online had arrived to find the indoor tables they had booked were occupied. We ended up having a packet of chips at the theatre for dinner instead! Very disappointed. Would highly recommend Hamilton though!

Although the staff was nice, the food was terrible. Two of the people in my party bought the gnocchi, which was heavily undercooked and had absolutely no taste.... My parents often visited JW's after WW2 when they arrived in Melbourne, and loved it. A group of us visited each month in 2017/18 and found the service very rude. We decided to persevere as the food, ambiance and wine list was...great. We took a break in 2019 (and obviously 2020) to compare with other places in Carlton. We went back just recently and the rudeness of the waiter (same one) was the worst ever. We have all lived and travelled around the world and I can honestly say I have never experienced such rudeness directed at a group I was part of. Some of the group are elderly and the waiter's imperious, impatient conduct left us all gobsmacked. None of us will ever go back. Life is too short.
